Healthy Oven Roasted Chickpeas (Sweet and Salty)

I never liked chickpeas growing up. Not the taste, not the texture, not the dishes made with it. For me, it was just a boring tasting legume that fell apart in my mouth and was the very definition of blah.

Then I tried oven roasted chickpeas and my life changed.

 4 Reasons Why You Should Oven Roast Chickpeas

  • It’s healthy
  • It gives them flavor
  • It (temporarily) transforms their consistency for the better.

Can you imagine what that consistency is? If you guessed crunchy then you win the “Sara is super predictable” prize, because that’s exactly right. It might be a temporary crunch (and that is the only downside of these chickpeas, because their crunch only lasts while they’re warm), but roasted chickpeas are crunchy, and that, along with the whole “you can give them any flavor your heart desires), makes them one of my favorite snacks.

Also, they’re really damn easy to make. I literally roasted them while eating breakfast today.




Wash chickpeas (when using canned chickpeas, otherwise you gotta let them soak overnight).






Pat the chickpeas dry with a towel or cloth (this will make them crunchier faster, so don’t skip this step).





Toss the chickpeas with olive oil and sprinkle them with either salt or sugar (I normally divide them in half and do half salt, half sugar)

Then you place them on an oven tray lined with parchment paper and into a preheated 200 degrees Celcius oven they go.

You can always add spices or herbs after cooking (I don’t recommend before because they might burn at the high temperature). And then straight to eating them (because remember, they might always taste nice, but they don’t retain their crunch for very long)!

  1. If using canned chickpeas, wash and drain chickpeas.

  2. Pat excess water from the chickpeas with a towel.

  3. Toss chickpeas with olive oil. Sprinkle with either salt or sugar.

  4. Roast in a 200 degrees Celcius preheated oven for 30 minutes.

  5. (Optional) Once roasted, add more spices and herbs.
